Uzhunthu Kazhi(Urad dhal Halwa or Sweet)

This popular Tamil Nadu Sweet is highly nutritious and truly mouth-watering.Authentic preparation of this dish demands the use of Black Jaggery or Karuppu Katti(a product of Palmyra Tree).An ideal substitute is Sugar. Give it a try if u get black Jaggery in ur nearby shops. Here is the recipe for u.Enjoy!.

Uzhunthu Kazhi(Urad dhal sweet) - Urad Dhal flour cooked with Black Jaggery syrup in gingely oil

Ingredients

    1/4 cup Urad dhal
    3-4 tbsp (lilttle less than 1/4 cup) raw rice
    1 tbsp fenugreek seeds
    1 1/4 cup black jaggery or 100gms sugar - prepare the syrup with 2 1/2cups water and strain it
    1 tsp green cardamom powder
    few - crushed cashews
    few raisins
    2 tbsp grated coconut
    1/4 tsp salt
    2 tsp ghee
    1/2 cup Gingely oil

Directions
    1.Soak urad dhal,raw rice and fenugreek seeds for an hour.Grind it to a thick and fine flour (just like u do for uraddhal vada-by sprinkling water now and then mix it with a pinch of salt.
    2.Heat 1/4 cup gingely oil in a non-stick kadai,add urad dhal kazhi flour little by lilttle,stirring it all the time.
    3.Add strained black-jaggery syrup next and keep on stirring continuously for over 10 -12 mins till it becomes thick and non-sticky by adding gingely oil spoonful now and then.
    4.When it becomes thick and non-sticky(surundu varum pothu),add green cardamom powder and grated coconut.mix it well and stir it.
    5.When oil begins to separate,after say in about 5-6 mins,turn off the flame and close it with a lid  and keep it aside.
    6.Now take a kadai and roast crushed cashews and raisins and garnish adding it on top of Urad dhal Kazhi.
    7.Serve it hot.Enjoy the tasty Uzhunthu(Uraddhal) kazhi.
