Ridgegourd-Peel Thogaiyal

Happen to know this thogaiyal after my marriage only(14 yrs ago) - a famous thogaiyal in my Hubby's family. Termed good for those who should avoid coconut much (1/3 rd qty of the coconut that is being used for coconut thogaiyal is used in this).

Ridgegourd-Peel Thogaiyal - Thick chutney made with ridgegourd outer-skin

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup Ridgegourd's outer skin-cleaned and chopped
1 tsp grated ginger
2 tbsp skinless uraddal
4 whole red chillies
3-4 curry leaves
1 small(sambar) onion
a gooseberry-sized tamarind
1 tsp salt - to taste
3 tbsp grated coconut
2 cm piece jaggery
2 tsp refined oil

Directions :

    1.Clean the ridgegourd thoroughly.Peel the good portions of the outer-skin of ridgegourd and chop them.
    2.Heat oil in a kadai and saute the chopped ridgegourd peel for 3-4 mins.While oil sauting the ridgegourd peel,add 2 tbsp skinless uraddal.This improves the taste as well as health.
    3.Add the curry leaves,grated ginger,red chillies,grated coconut and saute this just for 30 secs.Allow this to cool.
    4.Add this sauted things with remaining ingredients (small onion,jaggery,salt and tamarind) to the mixer -grinder and grind this adding 1 1/2 tbsp water only into paste(not too fine).
    5.Take the ground thick chutney out and serve it with Idli,dosa,chapathi,rice etc,.
